Winter 2027 Driver Education Information
Who: Students who will be 15 or older by July 20, 2027, and who have no failing grades from the current or previous term.
When: Class starts January 29, 2027.
- Meets Fridays, 8:00–10:30 am, in Mr. Adams’ classroom (Beutler Middle School Building)
- Drives scheduled throughout the week (after school) and on Fridays
- Course expected to finish by mid-April
Cost: $275 course fee* (or $50)
- Full-time West Side students can use the Idaho Advanced Opportunities Credit to cover $225 of the $275, leaving $50 out of pocket. (see detailed steps below)
- A separate $21.50 permit fee, paid to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office
How (registration steps):
- Step A – Jan. 14, 7:30 am: Complete the Sign-up Form (closes at 8:30 am or when full)
- Step B – Jan. 19, 7:30 am: Bring registration paperwork and payment to Mr. Adams, and pick up VOC form for the sheriff’s office. (see more information below)
- Step C – Jan. 19 – 27: Get the permit at the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. (See required items below)
- Step D – Jan 29, 8:00 am: Attend the first class with permit paperwork in hand. Students will be given a driving schedule in this class.
Detailed Registration Steps and More Information
Step A — Sign-Up (January 14, 7:30 am)
- The sign-up window opens at 7:30 am and closes at 8:30 am, or sooner if the class fills.
- Use the Driver Education Sign-up Form and complete all requested information.
- Later that day, you’ll receive a confirmation email if your student got a spot, along with:
- A copy of the Registration Form
- The Advanced Opportunities Participation Form. (This enables full-time West Side High School students to use the Idaho Advanced Opportunities Credit towards $225 of the course fee. Important: To be eligible for the credit, students must attend full-time at West Side High School.)
- If the class fills up, you’ll be notified by email. Seating for the class is limited and sometimes fills quickly. Driver Ed is offered three times a year (Fall, Winter, Spring/Summer)
Step B — Bring Paperwork to Mr. Adams (January 19, 7:30 am)
Once you’ve received your confirmation email, bring both of the following to Mr. Adams in his classroom:
- The completed Registration Form
- Either the Advanced Opportunities Participation Form and $50, OR the full course fee of $275
In return, Mr. Adams will give you a Verification of Enrollment form — you’ll need this at the DMV.
Make sure you bring the papers on this day between 7:30am and 8:00 am. If you don’t have a printer, Mr. Adams can give you a copy.
Step C — Get the Permit (January 19–25)
Visit the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office to register for the permit. Cost: $21.50, payable to the Sheriff’s Office.
Bring the following:
- The Verification of Enrollment form from Mr. Adams
- Student’s official state-issued birth certificate
- Parent’s valid Idaho driver license or ID card
- Student photo ID (activity card, yearbook photo, or other ID)
- Glasses or contacts (for the vision test)
- Student’s Social Security number
You’ll leave the sheriff’s office with a paper showing you have purchased a permit and a permit number. Don’t lose this paper. It must be brought to the first class, or the state requires the student be dropped from Driver Education.
Step D — First Day of Class (January 29, 8:00 am)
Students should bring:
- Permit paperwork from the DMV
- Pencil or pen (bring to every class)
Class is held in Mr. Adams’ classroom, Beutler Middle School Building, from 8:00–10:30 am. Parents may pick up students at 10:30 am.

Additional Notes
- Classes are usually held Friday mornings; a full schedule will be handed out at the first class. Schedules are subject to change without notice.
- This course is worth one elective credit at West Side High School.
- Please note that vehicle issues, illness, or weather may delay individual drives or classes.
- Driver Education is offered as a public service by the West Side School District and is not a required school service.
